Relatable af! I fell in love with cooking when I moved to LA and started dating my husband. We’d explore specialty markets together and make big meals with friends. I have a Google Maps list of all my favorite Mexican, Thai, Armenian, Chinese markets in LA… too many to name. We also just got a new Korean convenience mart in our neighborhood that I’m stoked to try. Even when I travel internationally, I love to try and hit at least a couple markets. It is truly the best way to discover new / amazing ingredients!
Right on - I am glad it spoke to you. Some one my happiest days in my early 20's with no cooking ego at all - just trying, failing and trying again. Oh and eating and then trying again :)
My sweetheart always says ohhh I love this but we will never have it this way again will we? Nope. Love cooking in the moment with what I have and never the same way twice. Looking forward to finding new ingredients with you.
I’ve heard that phrase a bunch with my better half. Whenever she says that, it’s like some one calling Marty Mcfly chicken!! Challenge accepted!! It usually ends the same way. Me going all OCD figuring out how to make it the on repeat over and over and over again making it better and then she never wants it form the restraunt again. 😂
For me in my early 20s, I followed recipes unless there was a ingredient I couldn't find or couldn't afford. But once I started cooking for people and just cooking more often, you start to realize these rhythms and then you can just riff. If I'm baking, I mostly follow the recipe. But if it's on the savory side of the equation, I use my knowledge and just use it as a building block instead of an albatross.
